thoughts on Christmas...

"You have only to stay over Christmas with a family who seriously try to 'keep' it... in order to see that the thing is a nightmare. Long before December 25th everyone is worn out—physically worn out by weeks of daily struggle in overcrowded shops, mentally worn out by the effort to remember all the right recipients and to think out suitable gifts for them. They are in no trim for merry-making; much less to take part in a religious act. They look far more as if there had beena long illness in the house." - C.S. Lewis on Christmas

Irritated and angered... (click here for the rest of the story)

Finished writing something at the water's edge site. I'm not going to post it here, but I think it would be worth your while to read and think thru rather than simply say I am on a "Rhine rant." (which may be partly true too...)

God-stories

Sometimes I think I just flow through my days living life without very much reflection on how God is working in my life and the lives of others. Today was not like that, and I'd like to share this story from my day.

After school I went to Kristin to get my hair cut. She was one of the players in the November Piano Extravaganza at Fellowship Church, and so I asked her how the following performances went after the Friday performance we attended. She proceeded to tell me a story that sent goosebumps all over my body and tears down my face. On Sunday night (the last performance) her husband, kids, parents, and grandfather were all there. Her grandfather, at the age of 84, was in pretty good health and was looking forward to seeing/hearing his granddaughter play. The pastor of the congregation ended up sitting near him and spent time thanking him for making music a generational thing so that today Kristin could bless so many people in their church with her gift. The concert started, and Kristin said that as she played, she felt a passion and power for the music that she hadn't experienced in any of the other performances. At the end, her page-turner, who was sitting on the bench next to her, said that there was a glimpse of heaven in this performance not seen in the others. Immediately after the concert Kristin connected with her family who was concerned about a lack of coherency in her grandfather's speech. They took him into the hospital, tests were performed, and the doctor came in later to say, "Take these final hours/days to love your father/grandfather because there is bleeding in his brain, and there is nothing we can do." A couple of days later he passed away. The following are almost exactly Kristin's words....."I cannot tell you what an awesome thing it was for me to be the one playing the prelude to my grandfather's entrance into heaven. As I was playing music to escort him into the heavenly gates, I know that God was knocking on the door of my grandmother's house in heaven and saying, "Marie, today you must put on your best dress, because very soon there is going to be a celebration. Martin is coming home!" It was like we were starting the celebration in the church that night to prepare him for an even greater celebration in heaven. Is it no wonder I felt such passion and power?"
I was truly speechless and felt such a sense of awe at how God works in the stories of our lives. God is so much nearer our lives than we often recognize! Today I paid for a haircut, but received a priceless gift in return.

This is a God-story from my life today, but yesterday I heard a God-story from Andy and Mic that they should share with you, too.... Now everyone is waiting to hear....:-)

a new direction...

At the risk of thinking cute pictures and family updates are good, but pushing you a bit further...

I read the following statement in 'Christianity Today' tonight:

"Election is not about who gets to go to heaven; election is about who God chooses to be part of his crisis-response team to bring healing to the world."

Calvin Soccer... continued...

SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 3, 2004 - MEN'S SOCCER
(By Abby Zylstra & Jeff Febus)

Calvin will get a chance to play for an outright MIAA title on Saturday afternoon when the Knights host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College at 2:00 p.m.

The two long-time rivals are now deadlocked for first place in the MIAA standings after a 5-1 Calvin victory over Tri-State and a 1-0 Hope loss at Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon.
The MIAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament will be on the line in Saturday's game. A victory will give either team the outright league crown and the MIAA's NCAA III Tournament bid. A tie would create a co-championship between the two schools for the second straight year but would also give Hope (15-4-0 overall, 12-1-0 MIAA) the league's NCAA III Tournament bid based on a head-to-head tie-breaker situation.
In the first meeting of the year between the two teams, Hope claimed a 1-0 victory in Holland on October 12.

Ranked eighth nationally and second in the latest set of NCAA III Great Lakes Regional Rankings, Calvin (17-1-1 overall, 12-1-0 MIAA) led 4-0 at halftime in its victory over Tri-State Wednesday and held control throughout the match.

"It was a good game for our team," said head coach Chris Hughes. "Our guys came to play."
The first goal came at the 6:10 minute mark. Senior Joel Veldhouse [Souix Falls, SD] kicked a corner kick to junior Matt Cosnek [Hopewell, PA]. Cosnek headed the ball into the net.
At the 18:29 minute of play, Veldhouse received a breakaway pass from junior Levi Kool [Holland] to score the second goal of the game and his team-leading 19th of the year.
Cosnek scored his second goal of the game and eighth of the year at the 19:34 minute mark with another header chipped from sophomore Nate Kooi [Lynden, WA}.
Sophomore Phil VanRees [Muskegon] scored his first goal of the season in the 43:37 minute of play with a shot in the box from freshman A.J. Dufendach [Grand Rapids].
The only goal in the second half came from Kool at the 55:16 minute mark off a pass from Cosnek.

Saturday's game between Calvin and Hope will mark the 76th meeting between the two rivals in men's soccer. Calvin leads the all-time series 40-28-7 but Hope has won seven of the last eight meetings.

Oh to be 5 again......... or maybe not

Sometimes I think it would be wondeful to return to a young age for awhile. Kids make the most out of so many little things. A backyard soccer game with Dad or a 30 minute trip to Hager Park often end with, "When can we do that again?" Just last week Anna asked, "When are we going to go to Aunt Rach's for a tea party again?" When I told her we would be going to Tom and Judy's for a pumpkin hunt, you would have thought she won the lottery. Most of the time, life is simply fun!

But last week, I was also reminded of how hard it can be to grow up. After putting Anna to bed one night, she got up and said she couldn't sleep because she was thinking about the bus. She went on to explain the the bus driver did not stop at Micandy because the neighbor girls (where she is dropped off) did not ride the bus. She said she rode the bus to the end and when the last boy got off, he told the bus driver, "That girl (pointing to Anna) forgot to get off." Apparently, the bus driver then took her back to Micandy. It breaks my heart to think how she must have felt after the bus passed her stop. It must have felt like an eternal bus ride!

She does not have a very good concept of time yet, so we are not sure when this happened. She said it happened awhile ago. At five, did she feel enough shame that she didn't dare to tell us? Maybe I don't want to be five again.

Jesus, hold her close on those afternoon bus rides!

Matthew!

FYI... Since a mother probably isn't supposed to be the first to brag... Unity's JV football team lost by one stinking point (you would understand 'stinking' if you were there), but Matt rushed for 210 years on Thursday night. Yes, 210 yards! Way to go cousin!!!

the world famous Nate...

From the Calvin College Sports Report
Calvin's Soccer Team...

Calvin dominated Wednesday's contest against Olivet (2-5-3 overall, 0-4-0
MIAA) but it took the Knights more than 56 minutes to finally score.
Calvin outshot Olivet 17-4 in the first half but put only six of the shots on goal. Calvin took advantage of an Olivet foul just outside the penalty box to score its first goal as junior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) sent a free kick into the box. Senior Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to redirect the pass to the feet of sophomore Nate Kooi (Lynden, WA) who popped in a shot just inside the far post to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Congrats Nate!

Leave it to the farm...

An hour ago I read thru Stephanie's post, and ten minutes ago I was sweeping the kithen floor and reflecting further on what she wrote...

I think there is a danger in connecting too much good stuff with the farm. It hasn't always been a place of good memories for the family. Last night wasn't really a good memory either. Yet, there was something powerful about being together. There was something good, not in the sense of happy good but in the sense of Godly good, as I watched Karen and her boys walk around the corner of the burning structure. I believe they were the first of the family to make it almost all the way around the former barn.

When Jill phoned us as she was just getting her first glimpses of the burning structure, I knew we needed to go to the farm. Funny thing. I think it goes back to what Steph wrote. I knew this was a family moment, not a good moment, just a family moment when belonging and experiencing together is important.

And how ironic to think that nearly ten years ago we wished ma/grandma was still around to see the first cows walk into that barn. Had she been there to join us last night, she wouldn't have been happy with Karen, Brad, Mike, and JD finding there way around the barn. I can imagine the words out of her mouth. She wouldn't have liked Anna and Jaden that close to the action either.

And I can't help but think that she would have also been... I would like to say proud, but she never liked anything prideful. I'll say that she would have been pleased that the family all came together. I would like to think that she was present with us last night, but we simply don't know about those kind of things.

I do believe that someday we can share the story of the Sept., 2004 fire with her. Too often the church has suggested things like 'maybe we won't recongize family members' or we 'won't recognize spouses.' It's a theology that suggests we are simply like computers that will have our hard drives erased prior to entering into the perfect presence of God. Somehow, as creatures who have the likeness of the Father, who are called sons and daughters by him, I have little doubt that we will remember much, if not all, of this life.

And I look forward to together telling grandma about the fire on September 27/28 of 2004.

Fire and Family

After last nights fire, I just thought I should let you guys know what an amazing family we all have. Some friends of mine who came to the fire last night said they couldn't believe how many family members came to the farm last night and how close-knit our family was. So thanks guys! In the past year or so since Calvin, I have really learned how important family is. I have so many friends whose family situation isn't exactly the greatest, if they even have a family at all. So through it all, I have definitly learned to appreciate you guys so much more! I love you all!

10 Years In Heaven

September 25, 2004. Can you believe it is ten years already? I just re-read the entries in a journal I kept in the days and months after Mom died and would like to share the following entry with you. I think the mystery of heaven is no less a mystery even after 10 years.

October 23, 1994
I wonder what it's like to be in heaven for a month. I cannot stop thinking today about her last two days of life: standing on the verge of eternity, yet still confined to an earthly body. We sat in the living room~captivated by the music, by the darkness of evening, by the candlelight that flickered on the walls, by her hands that searched for ours even after her voice had lapsed into an eternal silence. But what did her eyes see then? What spiritual sense began to grow inside her tired, disease-ridden body? As her earthly senses began to lose their grip on earthly reality, what new and wondrous heavenly sense captured her soul? Was the music in the room merged with the more resonant tones of heaven? Was the candlelight reflecting a more intense and vibrant light of glory? Was the warmth of our love for her the very outside of a cosmic, magnetic love that grew even greater in its dimensions as she released her grasp on life?

We saw her as dying, but what wondrous rebirth was she experiencing? My heart aches to understand this paradox of life and death, this heavenly transformation, this elusive, spiritual miracle that was within our grasp for two days, and yet we had no power to close our fingers around it. We felt it like we felt the angels that hovered near us, yet it was always outside of our eyesight.

Today...one month later...how I would like to go back to those few, precious hours and look and feel and see once more. Was there anything I missed?

Blessings to all of you today! We have missed Mom for 10 years, but we've had each other. That is a good thing. I love all of you!

Rick & Jill's News

Rick has a new job!!! Rick will start working at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Holland on October 4. He will be working in the shipping and receiving department. It will not be "typical" factory work...his job will involve a large variety of tasks and he will be moving from building to building throughout the Pfizer facility.

Matt continues to love football...even playing with 2 injured knees, yes 2. His consumption of Ibruprofen may help to give Pfizer employees job security.

Whitney is now 13. One of her friends gave her a kitten for her birthday. That kitten has now gone from 9 lives down to 7...he has survived a leap from the top deck of the house into the bird bath(hilarious !!!) as well as being stepped on the head by Rick (it was an accident...really it was). He walks a little funny now...fits right in.

Stephanie is busy at Calvin...still loves it and is still planning on pursuing nursing..specializing in pediatrics. She turns 20 this year..same age I was when I had her. Hmmmm

Whitney's Retreat Devotional

The life of a Christian is like the game of softball where God is the pitcher, you are the batter and the ball is the events thrown at you in life. God is in total control and He can throw anything at you. It may seem to be going steady but then all of a sudden it will rise or drop or maybe even curve. Just like life, you never know what’s going to happen. Your job as a Christian is to adjust to whatever is thrown at you. You can take a chance and swing. You may hit one out of the park, but you have to take the risk of a swing and a miss. Or you can play it safe and just take it. But you, as a Christian have to decide whether to take that risk of swinging. Or do you want to play it safe? What kind of Christian are you?
