Happy New Year from Kenya

Hello from Kenya!  We are all doing well.  We had one little glitch thus far:  Anna took the flu bug with her from home.  She was fine until five minutes after she stepped off the plan in Nairobi.  She spent the next two days recovering.  

Nadia caught the same thing, but she recovered in a day.  Then I awoke yesteday with aches that only increased as the day progressed.  I spent most of the day in front of the computer and taking massive naps.  The noise of the childern in the house celebrating the New Year woke me briefly, but then I drifted off into sleep awaking at 7 a.m. this morning.  I am on the way to recovery.

Andy & Mic are doing great.  They are loving the land, the people, and everything there is to learn from this culture.  They are sleeping well, eating well, and making good friends.  I would not be surprised if another trip to Kenya is in their future.  Not unlike India when they visited years ago, this place is also quickly growing in their souls.  

My kids are reacting a bit differently than I had expected.  Since Anna was sick for the first few days, they didn’t have big sister to show them the way.  I believe Nadia suffered the most from Anna’s absence.  She was clingy and didn’t know how to react to the kids touches and attempts at kindness.  Jaden, on the other hand, has been absolutely amazing.  While we have always thought of him as our shy kid, he’s showing a side of his personaltiy that we have not really seen previously.  

The boys invite him to play futball, games, and simply hang around.  Amazingly, he’s been convinced by their peer pressure to oblige them.  After a weeks time, he is going over to them even when the rest of us are at our director’s home.  

Today will be a big party with the community.  Sunday is worship and rest.  Monday and Tuesday will be lots of work as we leave for our safari early Wednesday morning. 

While the trip seemed long at nearly three weeks, the time goes so quickly with much to do, many faces to love, and much needed nightly rest.

Happy New Year to the Lubbers clan in 2011.  May God continue to bless our family in the year ahead!
